Prolonged exposure therapy

Prolonged Exposure Therapy is a type of evidence base treatment that works to confront memories, thoughts and feelings associated with a traumatic event working to decrease avoidance of painful memories and gain a sense of mastery of these memories and emotions.

What should i expect with Prolonged Exposure Therapy?

  • The therapist provides information about PTSD, its symptoms, and the rationale for prolonged exposure therapy. This helps the individual understand the purpose and benefits of the treatment.

  • During this phase, the individual is asked to recount the traumatic event in detail while verbalizing their thoughts and emotions. They repeatedly narrate the traumatic memory during therapy sessions, allowing them to process and reevaluate the experience.

  • This part of the therapy involves confronting situations or activities that the person has been avoiding because they are associated with the traumatic event. Gradually, the individual is encouraged to face these situations in a controlled and safe manner.

  • Throughout the treatment, the therapist helps the individual process their emotions and challenge any negative thoughts or beliefs related to the trauma.

  • Controlled breathing exercises as well as other coping skills, are often taught to help the person manage anxiety and distress during exposure.
